  14. <p>     DIED. Victor Louis, 64, shadowy Russian journalist who served
  15. as a conduit for the Communist Party and the KGB to the West
  16. during the cold war; of a heart attack; in London. Born Vitaly
  17. Yevgenyevich Lui, he worked as a correspondent for the London
  18. Evening News for 29 years, often using his Kremlin ties to
  19. scoop the rest of the world; he knew before Western reporters
  20. that Nikita Khrushchev had been ousted as the Soviet leader.
  21. Though Louis denied spreading KGB disinformation abroad, some
  22. Western journalists were convinced otherwise. "Why do you people
  23. always call me a colonel in the KGB?" he once asked British
  24. writer Ronald Payne. "Goodness, have you been promoted to
  25. general at last, Victor?" replied Payne.
